Antique Large "Sternau & Co." Nickel Plated Bathtub Swivel/Pivoting Soap and Sponge Holder - Circa 1900
This is an antique item
This is a beautiful antique nickel plated bathtub soap and sponge holder circa 1900. There is no clearly marked manufacturer's name on this piece but it was patented in October 1901 by the Sternau Co. of Brooklyn, NY. and invented by John Steppe. There is a "Patent Applied For" stamp on the front of one of the arms. See the patent document attached. This unique piece is very large and heavily cast and has a unique swivel feature that allows the small soap dish at the bottom to slide from side to side. Perfect for that double-ended slipper tub you are dreaming of! This very large piece will also easily accommodate one or two bath sponges in the upper basket. The overall condition is excellent for a piece this age. There is wear to the nickel plating on the mounting arms, down to brass in places.
S. Sternau & Co. of Brooklyn, New York, was a maker of chafing dishes, coffee percolators and other household items such as these bathroom accessories since 1893. It had previously applied the name to its "Sterno-Inferno" alcohol burner. In 1918, it promoted its Sterno Stove as being a perfect gift for a soldier going overseas. The company invented the Sterno product around 1900.
