Antique Coxon & Co. White Ironstone Soap Dish - Circa 1865
This is an antique item
This is an antique ironstone china soap dish made by Coxon & Co. of Trenton, New Jersey circa 1865. This countertop soap dish has 5 drainage holes in the basin and one drainage hole in the side to empty it, and two ridges to raise the soap. There are stains in the basin from years of caustic soaps but this adds to the character of this remarkable piece. Very few of these have survived, this is a seldom seen item. There are a few very minor chips to the edge of this but overall it is in very good condition.Â
The firm of Coxon & Co. was established in 1863, in Trenton, NJ by Charles Coxon and J. F. Thompson. Mr. Coxon had been a modeler at the pottery of Edwin and William Bennett, Baltimore, for about twelve years. Their products were cream‑colored ware and white granite. Mr. Coxon died in 1868, and the pottery was operated for a time by his widow and four sons, John, Charles, Frank and Jonathan, all practical potters.
